their eligible family members.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding, Defence and DVA work cooperatively to deliver care
and support to current and former members of the permanent and reserve forces and their
families.
Close and ongoing cooperation occurs between DVA and Defence under this Memorandum of
Understanding. Ongoing DVA engagement with members starting as early as practical in their
careers and continuing through their service and during and after their transition from
permanent or continuous full time service, results in better outcomes for members and their
families. Such cooperation and engagement is particularly important where a member suffers a
serious injury or illness or where the member is identified for medical separation from the ADF.
Defence and DVA work collaboratively on areas of research, mental health, rehabilitation and
medical aspects of transition. Defence is also engaged with DVA for the future contracting of
health care arrangements.
This is supported through Schedule 6 of the Agreement between Defence and Veterans' Affairs for the
Provision of Mental Health Support Services by the Open Arms to ADF Personnel (Agreement for
Services).
Department of Veterans' Affairs, continued
Under a MOU, and in accordance with the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme Act 2008,
DVA administer the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (DHOAS). The scheme was
established to support the Government's ADF recruitment and retention initiatives by
incentivising ADF members to remain in the ADF beyond critical career points.
Under Schedule 20 of the Memorandum of Understanding, Defence and DVA collaboratively
utilise system to system exchanges and/or direct access, to provide access to, or enable
disclosure of, certain Personal Information held digitally in specified departmental information
