The National Blood Authority is a statutory entity that manages and coordinates arrangements for the supply of blood and blood-related products and services on behalf of all Australian governments in accordance with the National Blood Agreement. The primary objectives of the National Blood Agreement are to: provide an adequate, safe, secure and affordable supply of blood and blood-related products and services; and, promote the safe, high quality management and use of blood and blood-related products and services in Australia.

The Department of Health and Aged Care, in collaboration with state and territory governments, has policy responsibility for ensuring Australians have access to an adequate, safe, secure and affordable blood supply. This includes supporting the NBA to administer the national blood arrangements.
